(Family of 5).
(We can't drive down. Iit would take too long (over 24 hours) and not an option with three kids under the age of 5.)
I'd love to stay in the theme park but i believe it's cheaper to rent a house. BUT i would have to rent a minivan with three car seats and that adds up too!
What did you do?
We're going towards the end of the year and staying at Port Orleans French Quarter under the Mousefest price. I think its a little over $1,000 for 7 nights.
Check the Disney website for discounts, Disney frequently offers discounts on either park tickets and/or hotel rooms. Check with them frequently because they change often.
It all depends on the time of year you are going. Disney is offering buy 4 nights get 3 free until the end of March. If one of your children is under the age of 3 you can stay at a value resort, if they are 3 or older you need to go to Port Orleans riverside where they can accommodate 5 in a room. So for a week in May it will cost you $1344.06 for your room and tickets (2 adults and 2 children 3-9) You can add park hoppers and water parks on along with dining.
Since it looks like you will be flying in you can take Magical Express at no extra charge and Disney transportation to the parks is free so you will not need to rent a minivan.
If you are staying off property, parking at Disney is $12 per day so you would have to add that into your total too.

Try the Seralago hotel in Kissimmee it has 2 room suites which will give you more room. The provide transportation to Disney free of charge. We use maingate taxi to and from the airport which charge by the person. If you go to orlando.com there are other means of transportation as well for larger groups. for 4 of us it costs 125 round trip. For Disney tickets try undicovertourist.com or mapleleaftickets.com sometimes they run promotions that you buy so many days you get some for free. It will depend on the types of tickets you want. Oh yeah the Seralago hotel is right next to old town. They have amusement rides and games that the kids will love. You will have to check but last year on Sunday was family day 10/person wrist ban all day. CHeck out there site on Oldtown.com. For airfare you didn't say where you are coming from but check out spiritair.com. If they are coming from your location you can get really good deals. As well as airtran and southwest are running good sales right now.
We are going in April. We are also a family of 5 (3 kids, 6,9, &12). For 4 nights at a Disney Resort, 5 days of tickets, & the meal deal total was $2700.00. We are driving which will take about 16 hours.
ask aaa to plan it out for you.
I looked around for ticket prices and AAA gives you 1 of the cheapest prices. Go with the muti-day disney pass(I bought a 5 day pass to Disney and opted to skip Universal Studios). Don't forget to purchase them before you head down, you don't want to be waiting in line at the gate.
We stayed about 35 minutes from Disney. It was a bad idea because of the time wasted in the morning when I was trying to get there early(less crowded). I would recommend that you stay within 15 min drive. If you stay at a hotel close enough to Disney, they may have a free shuttle to the park(can save by not renting a vehicle). I woudn't recommend my hotel but I did spend only about $55/night. I think you can get a 3 star hotel for around $75/night. I have heard of someone renting a house and had relatively a good experience but he did mention that he would probably try to stay in the park next time.
We decided to drive down(wife, 4 year old daughter, and 6 year old son). We drove down to NC the first day (11 hrs of driving) and the next day drove the rest of the way(another 11 hrs). Purchasing a portable dvd ahead of time was a life saver(remember to take as many of the dvd movies you own).
We were at the park for 2 days, 1 day off, 3 days back at the park and the last day was a rest day. On 1 of the rest day, we drove to Daytona(about 1 hr drive from orlando). Our total cost including food, gas, park ticket, and misc was about 3,000.
Definitely find a way to go down to Orlando. We were there over the Christmas break and the temperature was in the low 80's the first 4 days. It was such a great vacation that I plan to schedule more mini- weekend vacations in the future.
